Things To Consider When Choosing A Rescue Dog

May 15, 2022

May 20th is Rescue Dog Day! If you’re considering bringing a new four-legged friend into your home, adopting a rescue dog would be a great way to go. Of course, picking a pet is a pretty big decision. It’s important to choose the pooch that’s right for you. A local Wheat Ridge, CO vet lists some things to consider when picking a rescue dog below.

Size

This is definitely something to keep in mind, and for several reasons. If you’re renting, you may find it very difficult to find potential properties if you have a large dog. Your lifestyle also factors in. If you like things like running, hiking, and/or camping, an active, medium-sized dog may be your best bet.

Breed

Breed definitely plays a role in your Fido’s character and behavior, though experiences and socialization also factor in. A cuddly Pomeranian will act very differently than a German Shepherd, for instance. It also affects his health, as certain breeds tend to be prone to specific health issues. Of course, many rescue dogs are mutts, in which case you’d want to go with the best guesses, and get a doggy DNA done later.

Personality

Pets all have their own distinctive personalities. A Chihuahua may think of himself as a fierce warlord, while a Saint Bernard may barely bat an eye when the doorbell rings. If you have a family, or are planning to start one soon, you’ll want to pick a pup that’s great with kids. Got a kitty? Choose a dog that’s safe around cats.

Age

Many people prefer to adopt puppies. This is understandable, as there are some benefits to raising your furry pal yourself. However, there’s also a lot to be said for older dogs. They’re usually already trained, and are calmer than their younger counterparts. Plus, since older pooches don’t have as much time, the length of your commitment is shorter. That’s definitely something to consider. With a puppy, you could be signing on for well over a decade of pet parenting!

Love

There’s also that special X factor to consider. Sometimes people just know when they find their dog. This is always super special when it happens. Be sure to keep an open heart!
