Common Cat Care Mistakes

July 30, 2021

Cats are known for being easy keepers, which is one reason they’re so popular. Fluffy cleans herself daily, doesn’t really need training, and will discreetly use a litterbox to see to her needs. However, kitties aren’t completely autonomous. They do need proper care in order to thrive. Read on as a Wheat Ridge, CO vet lists some common cat care mistakes.

Overfeeding

Chubby cats are cute, but unfortunately, they’re at risk of developing some pretty serious health issues. Even giving Fluffy just ten calories too many each day can cause her to pack on a pound a year. That’s a lot for a little ball of fur! Ask your vet for specific advice on this, including portion sizes and suitable treats.

Letting Fluffy Roam

We know, we know: our feline pals love outdoor kitty activities, like chasing butterflies, making paw art on windshields, and bringing their humans ‘presents.’ However, Fluffy really is much safer staying inside. Cats that go outside are exposed to many dangers, including traffic, weather, parasites, and wild animals. They’re also much more likely to get lost, hurt, or even killed!

Not Enough Stimulation

Fluffy may spend a rather exorbitant amount of time sleeping, but she can’t snooze all the time. Your drowsy pet will get bored and unhappy with nothing to do! Offer her kitty luxuries like toys, beds, and window seats. Cats also like exploring things like boxes and pet tents. Daily play sessions will also help keep your furball fit and happy.

Lack Of Veterinary Care

Many of our feline patients don’t visit us as much as they should. Most cats should come in once a year, but ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule. At home, watch for signs of sickness, such as vomiting, poor grooming, respiratory issues, hiding, aggression, reduced appetite, weight changes, and/or litterbox woes. Any change in Fluffy’s behavior, appearance, or routine can be a red flag. Contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice anything amiss.

Not Getting Fluffy Fixed

Pet overpopulation is a huge problem. Kittens are adorable, but with so many homeless pets out there already, preventing unwanted litters really is just the responsible thing to do. Fluffy will also be calmer, healthier, and better behaved after. (Bonus: you’ll also be spared hearing those horrific kitty love songs.)
