Holiday Pet Safety Tips

December 15, 2022
Season’s Greetings! The holiday events and festivities are really going full force now. This time of year can be just as fun for pets as it is for people. However, it can also be dangerous! A Wheat Ridge, CO veterinarian offers some seasonal pet care tips in this article.

Be Cautious With Food

Treats are a big part of many holiday celebrations, for both people and pets. There’s nothing wrong with giving your animal companion something special! Just don’t let them have anything unsafe. That list includes garlic and onions; grapes and raisins (for dogs and cats); avocado; fruit with seeds or pips; chocolate; alcohol; caffeine; meat on the bone; and junk food. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Petproof Your Decorations

The basic rule of thumb for petproofing is that anything small or sharp should be considered unsafe. Unfortunately, many holiday decorations fall into those categories. Some dangerous items include ornament hooks, tinsel, light strands, pine needles, ribbons, manger pieces … the list goes on! If you have a frisky cat, limit the amount of decorations on the bottom of your tree. Hang just a few sturdy ornaments on those lower branches. The majority of the lights, tinsel, and ornaments should be higher up.

Be Cautious With Flames

Candles and fireplaces are not safe to have near pets. Make sure your four-legged friend can’t get near any actual flames. Put candles in high spots, and use thick candle holders. If you use a fireplace, put a grate in front of it.

Plants

Did you know that poinsettia is toxic to pets? If you get this pretty plant, keep it out of paws’ reach. Holly, mistletoe, ivy, and lilies are also dangerous. If you get a real tree, be careful with that as well. The water could be contaminated by chemicals, and the pine needles and sap are also concerns.

Avoid Stress

Noise, visitors, guests, commotions, and schedule changes are all potential triggers for nervous pets. Your furry buddy may even be scared of the giant Santa in the yard! New Year’s Eve is often particularly upsetting, because of the fireworks, noise, and commotion. Take extra care as the year winds down. If you’re having a party, give your cute pet a quiet, comfy spot to nap in until it’s over. Happy Holidays from Wadsworth Animal Hospital, your Wheat Ridge, CO animal clinic. Contact us anytime!
