If Pets Had Thumbs

March 2, 2022

There’s a pretty important holiday coming up: March 3rd is If Pets Had Thumbs Day! As you may know, our opposable thumbs seem to have played a pretty big role in our development and success as a species. Thumbs are crucial for much more than giving thumbs-ups. They also let us hold tools and grip things. These were game changers for early man. Of course, Fluffy and Fido don’t have thumbs. That may actually be a good thing! Our furry pals would definitely wreak some havoc if they were to suddenly grow thumbs overnight. A local Wheat Ridge, CO vet offers some examples of this below.

Buffet

It’s probably safe to say that food would be one of the highest priorities for our four-legged pals. Fido would sample pretty much everything and anything in the house. Fluffy would probably open a lot of cans, just to sniff the contents and turn her cute nose up at them.

Sports And Recreation

Pets are quite athletic, and they seem to enjoy sports in their own way. Fishing with poles may appeal to both our canine and feline pals. Fido may also enjoy golf, football, or billiards, while Fluffy may want to try her paw at soccer or hockey.

Redecorating

Our four-legged friends can get pretty opinionated when it comes to how their homes are supposed to look. You may come home to find your place full of beds, toys, and pet fountains. Fluffy would also want plenty of catnip and cat grass plants, while Fido would think giant bowls filled with treats and kibble would be a nice touch. Stretch goals would include cat ramps, doghouses and swimming pools, and indoor ‘yards.’

Evictions

Do you have more than one pet? While many of our furry patients can (and do) form strong bonds with each other, they’re also highly prone to jealousy. Fluffy wouldn’t hesitate to open the door for Fido, and then lock it behind him. Your four-legged bffs would probably also evict the vacuum cleaner.

Cancellations

If Fluffy and Fido learned how to text or email, we may find that our appointment calendars clearing rapidly. Our animal companions are much healthier with proper care, but that wouldn’t necessarily stop them from canceling appointments and taking a nap instead.
