Anxiety In Dogs

February 15, 2022

Did you know that our canine companions can suffer from anxiety, just as people can? Fido is very emotional, and he can feel frightened or scared about certain things. Read on as a Wheat Ridge, CO vet offers some advice on caring for an anxious pup.

Signs Of Anxiety In Dogs

Fido may display his anxiety in many ways. Some pooches engage in destructive behaviors, like chewing, digging, or destroying your sofa. Others may soil inappropriately, act clingy or jittery, or go off their food. Your pup may also shiver or tremble, and he may whine or howl. Pacing, panting, drooling, yawning, and unusual or heavy shedding can also be signs of anxiety. Your canine friend may also stand or move in a strange manner.

Causes

There’s no one universal reason for dogs to be anxious. The common denominator is fear. Dogs can have fears or phobias about many different things, just as people can. Some of the things Fido may be frightened of include loud noises, strange people and places, and changes in their routine or household. Many pups also suffer from fear of abandonment. This is particularly common in those who have been abandoned by or separated from their prior owners. If your pooch is a rescue, his anxiety may very well stem from abuse or neglect. If you aren’t sure what is making your furry buddy nervous, consult your vet or a pet behaviorist.

Treatment

There are some things you can do to help your furry pal cope with his anxiety better. Making sure that Fido is getting plenty of activity and playtime will help. Dogs are always calmer once they have burned off any excess energy or zoomies! Many of our canine pals tend to thrive with stability, so keeping your four-legged buddy on a steady routine may also help. Your pooch may also benefit from medication and/or pet calming products, such as treats, sprays, or calming shirts. Of course, the best thing you can do for Fido is to just make sure that he feels loved and safe. Just talking to him, petting him, and maybe giving him some extra attention and/or a treat if he seems very scared may help. Ask your vet for specific advice.
