Pampering A Senior Cat

January 15, 2022

Is your feline buddy in her golden years? Cats can live well into their teens, and maybe even into their 20’s with good care. Given that they are considered seniors by age nine, that means your little buddy can have a long retirement ahead of her. Senior cats do have slightly different needs than younger ones, though, so Fluffy will need some extra TLC. A Wheat Ridge, CO vet discusses pampering an older kitty below.

Beds

To be fair, this one applies to all cats. Our feline friends are very sleepy, so seeking out warm, comfy napping spots is always a top priority for them. You don’t have to break the bank ordering pet beds, though. Fluffy will also happily snuggle up on a folded throw blanket on a couch, chair, or ottoman. You can also put blankets or pillows into boxes or wicker baskets.

Grooming

Kitties are very diligent about keeping their pretty coats clean. However, as Fluffy gets older, she could get stiff and sore. This can make it hard for her to reach her whole body, especially if she is obese. Brushing her gently will remove dead hair and dander from her coat. This will prevent mats and tangles, which are both uncomfortable and itchy. It will also keep your furry friend looking her best.

Veterinary Care

Older cats can be prone to developing certain health conditions, such as arthritis and diabetes. You’ll need to monitor Fluffy’s health carefully. This may mean more frequent appointments. Follow your vet’s recommended appointment schedule. Also, watch for signs that your kitty isn’t feeling well. Some common ones are hiding; changes in weight, appetite, vocalizations, or behavior; vomiting; diarrhea; lethargy; and lumps or bumps. Call us immediately if you notice anything unusual.

Kitty Comforts

Jumping and climbing will get progressively harder for Fluffy over time. Opt for kitty furniture that’s easy for her to get on and off. Nightlights, pet ramps, and senior-friendly litterboxes can also help keep your furry buddy comfy and purring.

Love

Many of our feline companions become quite cuddly in their golden years. Fluffy may also be frightened or confused by the changes she is experiencing, and she may seek comfort. Pay lots of attention to your pet, and keep that motor going!
