Keeping Kitty Fit

July 30, 2021

Is your cat sleeping right now? It wouldn’t exactly be a huge shock if the answer to that question was yes. Our feline buddies certainly are tired! Fluffy’s napping predilection may be cute, but it does make it easy for her to get out of shape. Pets need to stay active to be healthy, just like we do. A Wheat Ridge, CO vet offers some advice on keeping kitties fit in this article.

Toys

Make sure that your furball has lots of playthings to pounce on and chase after. Kitties sometimes do have specific preferences for toys, so offer your feline friend a variety, and see what she likes best. You’ll want to get some things Fluffy can use by herself, such as catnip mice, and others that you can use to play with her, like wand toys.

Furniture

Another thing you can do is get Fluffy some pieces of furniture that encourage her to jump and climb. Cat towers are great for this! (Your cute pet will also get a napping spot, jungle gym, manicure station, and vantage point out of the deal.)

Trickery

You probably won’t get away with this one too often, as eventually Fluffy will catch on. However, all’s fair in love, war, and cat care! Toss a toy or crumpled-up piece of paper across the room or down the hall. Your kitty will probably run after it out of sheer curiosity.

Playtime

Interactive play is both more fun and more challenging for Fluffy than simply batting a ball beneath the couch. Take a few minutes every day to play with your furry buddy. One option is to keep a laser pointer handy near the chair you relax in. You can also use a remote-controlled mouse or a wand toy.

Walks

This one is definitely not an across-the-board suggestion. If Fluffy has always been an indoor cat and/or is old, frail, or sick, she’s better off staying indoors. However, if you have a young, active kitty that is bold and fearless, your frisky little pet may enjoy being walked on a leash. This is also a good option for former strays that are still getting used to indoor life. Just put your furry pal’s safety first! Ask your vet for recommendations.
